New Middle School Staff

Mrs. Cheyenne Rathert

Mrs. Cheyenne Rathert

PLMS will be welcoming four new teachers this school year!

Mrs. Cheyenne Rathert will be teaching fifth grade this year at PLMS. While Mrs. Rathert is new to teaching in USD 343, you may have caught a glimpse of her at a band concert or two over the past two years. Cheyenne is married to current PLMS/PLHS Band Director, Steven Rathert. Among the reasons that Mrs. Rathert was excited to join the USD 343 family were the positive things she has seen and heard about USD 343, as well as the time she has spent at events with Steven being very positive. Cheyenne graduated from KU with her undergraduate degree, and Emporia State with her Masters degree. This will be Mrs. Rathert’s 10th year in the classroom! She has served as an academic interventionist, and she has taught 1st, 4th, and 5th grades in the Lawrence, Osage City, and Bonner Springs districts. Cheyenne looks forward to the opportunity to become a member of such a welcoming community.

Welcome to Kahle Spence, who will be filling the shoes of Janelle Carey as an English teacher at PLMS, following Mrs. Carey’s well-deserved retirement. Mr. Spence is familiar with the area as he grew up in Lawrence, and attended high school in Oskaloosa. Following graduating from Oskaloosa, Kahle enrolled at the University of Kansas to work towards a degree in education. Mr. Spence started his educational career at McLouth Elementary, teaching for ten years as a 1st, 4th, and 5th grade teacher. Outside of teaching, Mr. Spence enjoys cycling, basketball, video/photo editing, among many other things! A fun fact about Kahle is that he has an identical twin brother. Mr. Spence is excited to join a district that has a great reputation for putting their students first!

Michelle Bailey will be joining the PLMS staff this year as a sixth grade teacher. Mrs. Bailey is originally from Astoria, Oregon; however, she grew up in, and graduated from, El Dorado, Kansas.  Michelle graduated with her undergraduate degree in Elementary Education from Emporia State University. Following graduation, Mrs. Bailey taught second grade at Mission Valley for five years. Michelle and her husband, Ryan, live just north of McLouth with their six year old son, Colt, who will be in second grade at LES this year. When asked about why she wanted to teach at Perry-Lecompton, Michelle stated, “My son has been part of the USD 343 family since he was in the daycare program. Every year we encounter more amazing staff members, students, and families. We quickly discovered that this district is the place you go to find a strong sense of community. I want to be able to help give back to the community that has a hand in raising my son.”

Our final new staff member at PLMS may look familiar to some who have been in the community for a while. Mr. Andy Meyer will be joining the PLMS staff as the 7th/8th grade science teacher. Mr. Meyer grew up in Perry, and graduated from PLHS in 1997. Following high school, Andy earned his Bachelor's degree in Recreation Administration and Health/Fitness from Ottawa University where he played baseball. Mr. Meyer worked outside of education following graduating from Ottawa; however, he decided that his true calling was as an educator. He enrolled and graduated from Fort Hays State with his Bachelor’s of Science in Education. Andy has taught the past nine years in the Oskaloosa school district as a sixth grade teacher. Mr. Meyer has also coached quite a few sports over that time period, a trend he will continue at USD 343. Andy is looking forward to coming back to his alma mater and having a positive impact in the district.

New Elementary Teachers

Samantha Buettner

Samantha Buettner

Perry Elementary and Lecompton Elementary are excited to welcome two new staff members this school year!

The first new face is one that many in the USD 343 community will recognize. Lecompton Elementary is happy to welcome Ms. Kelsey Kasson as a 1st grade teacher! A 2013 graduate of PLHS, Kelsey went on to graduate from Wichita State University. Kelsey started her education career as a para-educator for USD 343 for five years. After that, Ms. Kasson was asked to step into the role of a long term substitute for Keystone Learning Services.  Outside of the classroom, Kelsey enjoys gardening, fishing, playing board games, attending concerts, going on little road trips, and visiting zoos. For fun, she plays in a women’s volleyball league in Lawrence. When asked about why she wanted to return to USD 343, Kelsey answered, “Where else would I go? I chose USD 343 because I had such a wonderful experience in the district when I was growing up. I knew that nothing had changed and I wanted to be a part of a fantastic community.”

Our second new elementary staff member will be joining the Perry Elementary family this fall as a first year Kindergarten teacher. We are proud to welcome Ms. Samantha Buettner to the district this year! Samantha is originally from Rosenberg, Texas; however, a fun fact is that her dad lived on Perry Lake for a while before Samantha was born. Ms. Buettner graduated from Kansas State this past spring with her degree in Elementary Education after completing her student teaching in Manhattan.  While at KSU Samantha was a member of the cheer leading team. When asked why she wanted to come to USD 343, Ms. Buettner responded, “I wanted to come to USD 343 because of the strong sense of community in the district and surrounding areas.” Ms. Buettner will also be taking over as the PLHS cheer coach this year!

As we begin the 2024 school year, be sure to give a warm Perry-Lecompton welcome to both Kelsey and Samantha when you see them in the buildings and community!

Enrollment Information ~ 2024-2025 School Year

This fall 2024, the district will continue online enrollment using PowerSchool Enrollment Express. Student enrollment will be required to be completed online. PowerSchool Enrollment Express is web based and the pages are mobile friendly. This will allow parents to complete the process on a computer, smartphone or tablet.  Computers will be available in the buildings during onsite enrollment if you do not have access at home. In addition, we are strongly encouraging families to pay fees through the e~Funds link on our website.

Starting on July 23rd, parents can update current student enrollment information through the PowerSchool Parent Portal. (**Note: this will not work with the PowerSchool app, you must be using the web based Parent Portal.) Please select the “Forms” button found on the left menu, for each student, click the Enrollment tab to open the enrollment forms and complete all forms to ensure we will have accurate information on file.  If your child will be picked up from or dropped off at a daycare provider’s home, please make sure you include that information in the Transportation section.

Next, parents should go to the Parents and Students section of the District website and open the Enrollment link.  The necessary fee schedules are posted for your reference.  Using that information, you may calculate your balance due. Questions about fees should be directed to the appropriate school secretary or administrator.

Payment may be made in one lump sum through e~Funds.  Please keep in mind that the system will charge $1.00 for the electronic checking payment (from your bank account). The system carries a Non-Sufficient Funds (NSF) charge if the payment is returned as such. Parents using debit or credit cards will incur a $2.65 flat fee per $100, per transaction. These fees go directly to e~Funds and are not set by the school district. For user’s guides and more information on e~Funds please visit the Online Payments article on our website.

Parents who prefer to write a check need to print out the Fee Schedules and send them with your check to the District Office (PO Box 729, Perry 66073).

We are looking forward to a great school year in partnership with your family.  Please feel free to contact your student’s school principal if you would like more information about enrollment procedures.
